A garden doesn’t stop evolving once the planting is finished. Sometimes the most important part comes the following year—seeing how everything has established and making adjustments where needed.
Greenleaf’s Garden Design originally completed this Andover garden installation in August 2025. We removed the old boxwoods and replaced them with six colorful blue hydrangeas, giving the front of the home a softer look with plenty of summer color.
When I checked in with the client in early July, I was happy to hear that five of the six hydrangeas had made it through their first year beautifully. Only one needed to be replaced.
During the visit, we also talked about another challenge in the garden: aggressive invasive weeds. We went over the different weeds appearing throughout the beds and discussed options for getting them under control, including weed barriers and targeted treatments.
That’s one of the reasons I like returning to gardens we’ve installed. The first year is only the beginning. A little maintenance, a few adjustments and keeping ahead of problems can make a big difference as the garden matures.
And those blue hydrangeas against the white house and dark shutters? They’re really starting to make their presence known.
Greenleaf’s Garden Design provides garden design, installation and ongoing garden maintenance throughout Andover and surrounding Massachusetts communities.
