Pruning Shrubs & Small Trees
by Greenleaf’s Garden Design!

Rich is a Massachusetts Certified Arborist.   He owned a tree service company for 22 years.  Now he prunes trees and shrubs that are under 9 feet tall. He is a wizard with a pair of pruners.

Reasons to Prune

1) Rejuvenate Old or Overgrown Plants: –This involves pruning to create new plants from old plants. –This practice is particularly helpful for shrubs that have become overgrown, sparse, or leggy and helps to stimulate the formation of new, more productive, vigorous wood.

2) Prevention and treatment of disease. Pruning can remove any portions that have a disease, fungi, and other types of decay, stopping it from spreading to healthier branches. Removing these branches can also expose the others to more sunlight and air circulation, which also helps to reduce the incidence of disease. Branches that rub together should be removed to eliminate potential damage to a main branch.

3) Shape It allows you to see your surroundings better. This is especially beneficial if you live by a lake, the mountains, a gorgeous sunlit horizon—anywhere where there is a view! Pruning is also done for aesthetic appeal, and you can trim your trees into a shape that is pleasing to you and one that compliments the environment.
