Year two at the Tyngsboro Dream Diner, and these annual gardens are really starting to show off!
I personally planted 700 annual Vinca along this sunny slope. This location gets direct morning and midday sun, which means the soil heats up and dries out quickly. That makes Vinca a great choice—it thrives in the heat, loves the sunshine and handles drier conditions remarkably well.
This year, Greenleaf’s Garden Design incorporated 2 yards of compost into the garden to improve the soil and give the plants a strong foundation for the growing season.
But sometimes even good soil needs a little extra help. The Vinca weren’t producing the rich, vibrant color I wanted, so we supplemented them with iron to help correct the nutrient deficiency and bring out that bright, healthy growth.
And what a difference! The gardens are now bursting with vivid color—exactly what we wanted for such a highly visible location.
Great gardens aren’t just about planting flowers. They’re about understanding the sun, soil, moisture and nutrients and making adjustments when the plants tell you what they need.
