At this Pelham, NH foundation garden, the sun bears down from about noon until 5 PM. Instead of fighting the conditions, we decided to design around them.
My first thought was: succulents!
Then I found something I couldn’t resist — a spectacular prickly pear cactus, one of the largest I’ve ever seen available locally. We paired it with colorful, sun-loving perennials and succulents selected to handle the heat while giving the garden plenty of variety, texture and color.
Then we waited to see how everything would respond.
One month later, in early July, the garden was thriving. Even better, the prickly pear surprised us with two beautiful yellow flowers!
The combination of the cactus, succulents, colorful flowers and contrasting foliage turned a blisteringly hot foundation bed into something distinctive and fun.
And the best part? The client was so delighted with her new garden that she took the time to leave Greenleaf’s Garden Design a wonderful Google review.
Sometimes the toughest growing conditions lead to the most interesting gardens.
