This Westford, MA garden has been an evolving project—and a good example of how a garden can get better each season.
Last September, my client wanted bright, impactful color planted in distinct groupings. His office overlooks the garden from about 20 feet away and two stories up, so the flowers needed enough color and mass to really stand out from his window.
I designed several groupings using summer-blooming perennials that would give him the effect he was looking for. There was just one catch: the bunnies would probably love them as much as we did!
I suggested installing a discreet 2-foot black bunny fence around the garden. His answer was simple: “Go for it.” The fencing blended nicely into the landscape and did its job.
Extending the Blooming Season
When we returned this spring, about 16 plants hadn’t made it through, and the client had a new request. Instead of concentrating primarily on summer color, he wanted different groups of flowers blooming throughout the spring and summer.
That changed the design considerably.
