This Andover client asked Greenleaf’s Garden Design to create a new perennial garden in late August of last year. I knew right away that the location was perfect for intensely blooming summer perennials that would provide waves of color from midsummer right through to frost.

There was just one catch—the bunnies would probably enjoy the garden as much as we would! So we installed a 2-foot-tall black bunny fence around the garden. It blends nicely into the background while protecting the plants inside.

I stopped by in late July to see how everything was progressing, and the garden was putting on quite a show. Yellow and red Coreopsis, bright Black-Eyed Susans, and beautiful pink and orange Coneflowers were all blooming together.

The photos really tell the story. What was planted late last summer has already developed into a colorful, full garden—and there is still plenty of growing and blooming ahead.

This is exactly why I love using summer-blooming perennials: plant them once, give them the right conditions, and enjoy the show year after year.
