Garden Metamorphosis
in Groton, MA
This Groton Garden has been a labor of love—and a perfect example of how thoughtful planning and plant passion can completely transform an outdoor space.
In September of 2023, we worked with a dedicated plant collector to reorganize her existing perennials and introduce a variety of new, unique species. She sourced inspiration from Van Berkum Nursery’s extensive perennial lists and put together a wishlist of standout plants.
Our team began by carefully digging up and setting aside the perennials she wanted to keep. We then amended the garden with 10 inches of fresh garden soil to build a healthy foundation for everything to come. She selected several distinctive shrubs, and we designed a fresh layout that blended her cherished existing plants with the new perennials and shrub varieties.
Fast-forward one year.
In the fall of 2024, we returned to maintain and refine this now-established perennial garden. On Day One, we connected new irrigation lines to support her latest plant additions, cut back the perennials, and cleared the fallen lawn leaves to give the beds space to breathe. The following day, we installed a barrier to prevent plants from overspreading and to help maintain the structure of the garden as it matures.
This project continues to grow—literally—and you can follow the transformation through photos from year to year!
