Every garden has its challenges, and this Townsend, MA property had a particularly stubborn one — aggressive vines that just didn’t want to give up their territory!

Our new client wanted to reclaim her garden beds and create a beautiful landscape filled with colorful perennials. But before we could think about flowers, we needed to tackle what was happening beneath the surface.

Out With the Old, In With the New!

At Greenleaf’s Garden Design, we knew that simply pulling out the vines wouldn’t be enough. Those persistent roots had a way of finding their way right back into the garden!

Our solution was to install weed barrier fabric along the garden edges, extending approximately three inches above the surrounding soil to help discourage those unwanted invaders from creeping back in.

Then it was time to bring in the muscle!

Our trusty Dingo went to work removing 10 yards of old, tired soil, making room for 10 yards of fresh, nutrient-rich Garden Soil. That’s a whole lot of dirt, but preparing the soil properly is one of the most important parts of creating a successful perennial garden.

And Here’s the Really Nifty Part… NO BUNNIES!

Now, anyone who knows me knows that rabbits can turn a beautiful perennial garden into an all-you-can-eat buffet practically overnight!

But this Townsend property has a wonderful advantage — no pesky bunnies nibbling away at our plants!

That opens up some exciting possibilities for planting lovely, exceptional perennials without having to surround everything with protective cages.

We can concentrate on beautiful colors, interesting textures, and flowers that will bring this garden to life throughout the growing season.

A Few Rocks With a Special Assignment!

Along the garden edge, where we incorporated evergreen vinca, I strategically placed a few rocks to discourage unwanted foot traffic through the planting beds.

Our client assured me those rocks would keep the little rascals at bay!

I certainly hope she’s right!

With the old soil removed, fresh garden soil installed, and the beds prepared for their new plantings, this Townsend garden is ready for an exciting new chapter.

A little planning, a lot of digging, and a fresh foundation can make all the difference!
